Fire investigators strongly believe arson caused Cummings St. fire

Fire investigators are convinced that the fire which gutted Ram’s pharmacy and other businesses in a Cummings Street building was the work of an arsonist.

Fire fighters were called to the scene of the blaze late on Saturday night and were able to contain the fire to the one building which is located close to the busy Regent Street shopping district.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said investigators believe arson was the cause, because persons who were close by said they got the scent of gasoline just before the blaze was noticed.

A man who was seen close to the building as lawmen and the fire service arrived, was able to avoid being captured as he escaped upon noticing the police.

No one was in the building at the time of the blaze and all of the businesses housed in the building was closed. However, a large hole was spotted to the back of the building where it is suspected, someone may have used to gain access to the building to start the blaze.

Up to early this morning, fire fighters and investigators were still at the scene gathering evidence and questioning persons who live close by.
