After distancing himself from his former bodyguard of four days, former Attorney General Anil Nandlall has now declared that the man’s arrest was “much ado about nothing”.

The former bodyguard, Rajput Narine, was arrested by the police as they widened their investigations into the murder of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing who was gunned down in the Diamond community on March 10 as he encouraged residents to vote against the People’s Progressive Party.

Nairne was released after 72 hours in custody but told to report to the police constantly.

In Facebook note, Mr. Nandlall fired off at those who sought to link him to the Crum-Ewing murder because of the arrest of his former bodyguard.

He said “great effort was expended at pointing fingers in my direction. I often under-estimate how much attention I am capable of generating until something like this occurs.”

The former Attorney General said following Rajput Narine’s arrest, he was forced to call a press conference because of the attention being directed at him. He said now it appears the former bodyguard’s arrest was not a big issue.

“As it turned out, it appears to be much ado about nothing. I subsequently learnt that Rajput Narine was released after 72 hours in Police custody. His arrest hardly had anything to do with Courtney Crum-Ewing. It was in relation to an attempt by a known person in the criminal underworld in Police custody trying to implicate him in another incident, wholly unrelated to Crum-Ewing.”

During his hastily called press conference two Mondays ago to distance himself from his former bodyguard, Anil Nandlall said he hardly knew the man and only hired him as his bodyguard based on the recommendation of the man’s brother who was a friend of his.

He said he hired the man after the Courtney Crum-Ewing murder and was forced to fire him after four days because his driver revealed to him that the newly hired bodyguard was sharing information about his whereabouts with persons unknown.

Nandlall has always distanced himself from the Crum-Ewing murder and has also claimed that he never met or had any conversation with Crum-Ewing during his many days of protest outside the Attorney General Chambers while he served as Attorney General.

However, other protesters and eyewitnesses and Crum-Ewing himself had revealed exchanges between the two men on more than one occasion.
