Former Police Sergeant freed after prosecution admits having no evidence linking him to murder of reputed wife

Six years after he was arrested, charged, and remanded to jail for the murder of his reputed wife, former Police Sergeant Colin Bailey walked free of the charge.

During the trial this morning, the Prosecution admitted to the Judge that the witnesses in the matter would not provide any evidence tying the former police officer to the crime.

When further questioned by Justice Jo-ann Barlow, the Prosecution also admitted that at the preliminary inquiry level of the case, there was also no witness who provided information tying the former policeman to the crime.

With that admission by the Prosecution, the defense team of Attorneys Nigel Hughes, Konyo Sandiford, and Ronald Daniels moved for the matter to be dismissed.

The trial judge agreed with the pleading of the defense, declaring that Mr. Bailey should have never been charged for the 2013 murder when there was no evidence supporting the charge. She said bringing him before the Court with no evidence to back the charge was a waste of the Court’s time.

The jury was instructed to return a not guilty verdict.

Mr. Bailey’s reputed wife, Sirmattie Ramnaress was found dead in her Diamond home in 2013. The reputed husband was charged two years after the murder and after another man was already charged with the same crime.

That other man, Colin Grant, appeared before the Court earlier this week and admitted to killing the woman. He entered a guilty plea to the lesser count of manslaughter and did not implicate anyone else of being involved in the crime.

His guilty plea was accepted by the Court and his sentencing will come up in November.
