At least four Guyanese nationals died and at least three others are suspected to have suffered the same fate, after the boat they were traveling in from neighbouring Venezuela slammed into another boat, resulting in all of the passengers being thrown overboard.
The incident took place just off the Orinoco River early on Monday morning as the boat was making its way back to Guyana with mostly traders.
Many Guyanese who live in the bordering region would travel across to Venezuela to do their shopping and bring items back over to Guyana for their stores in the interior district. The four persons who have been confirmed dead have been identified as Joel King, Melissa Khan, Margaret Khan and Simone Khan.
The names of those still missing have not been released.
Reports from the area said Venezuelan authorities rushed to the area to offer assistance and also provided medical assistance to those who survived the early morning tragedy. An investigation is currently underway.
