Freak accident during rainstorm leaves miner dead in Region Seven

One person is now dead and another two have sustained injuries following an incident in a mining pit at Sandhill Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region 7.

Dead is miner Olrick Matthews of Port Kaituma, Northwest District, while Edwin Garraway of Diamond Housing Scheme and Bryan Richard of Pomeroon River sustained injuries. The three men were employed at a mining camp, owned by Romeo King.

A Police statement said at around mid-day on Monday the three miners were working in the mining pit when a heavy downpour of rain coupled with high winds caused a tree to be uprooted and fall into the mining pit, hitting the three miners.

The Police said Edwin Garraway received a fractured left hand while Bryan Richard received lacerations to his forehead. Both are presently seeking medical attention at the Bartica Regional Hospital.

Following the incident, the police said a report was made and the motionless body of Matthews was escorted to Bartica Regional Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival.

The police are continuing their investigations.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Monday urged residents along the Cuyuni and Mazaruni Rivers to immediately move to higher ground due to current and anticipated rainfall and mudslides.

Since the start of the rainy season several weeks ago, Region 7 is among the regions most affected by heavy rains and flooding.
