Gas to Energy project to start up in December -Minister Indar

The Government’s gas-to-energy project, which is under construction at Wales, is set to start up in December, according to Minister of Public Utilities, Deodat Indar.

The project which is two years behind schedule, is expected to see the first of four gas turbines being commissioned in December, with the others set for commissioning in the first quarter of 2027.

Speaking on the Starting Point Podcast, Minister Indar said the first 57-megawatt Siemens gas turbine is expected to be operational this year under the revised agreement with the contractor.

“The new agreement with the contractor is that we will have first power for December for one of the turbines and three months after the other three (turbines) will come on board and give us 228 megawatts of power and then a few months after, we will get the two steam turbines to take us to 300 megawatts,” Mr. Indar noted.

He said the Government has invested more than US$722 million in transmission lines, substations and other grid infrastructure to ensure the electricity generated at Wales can be transmitted efficiently across the coast.

As a result, it was explained that a new transmission network, upgraded substations and a new national control centre are being completed to strengthen the electricity grid and improve reliability.

“The gas to energy project has been going on a while now, most of the procurement has been completed, all of the stuff that had to be built are on their way to Guyana and some are already in country. So, the instruction to the contractor is to get everything on site and ensure we start moving on it. That project is no small venture

The Minister said the focus has been shifting from construction to operation of the project.

Recently the government selected Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited of Trinidad and Tobago and its local partner Guygas as the firms for the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) Phase 1 Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Plant.

Minister Indar said negotiations for that that Operations and Maintenance component are an advanced stage and some parts of the contracts are being ironed out.
