GDF soldier shot after patrol comes under attack near Venezuelan border

On the same day that Guyana was arguing its case before the International Court against Venezuela’s claim of Guyanese territory, a Guyana Defence Force patrol team near the Venezuelan border came under gunfire from the Venezuelan side, leaving a GDF rank nursing two gunshot injuries.

In confirming the incident, the Guyana Defence Force explained that the patrol boat was escorting three civilian boats transporting personnel and cargo from Makapa to Eteringbang, when they came under fire in the vicinity of Black Water.

The GDF said its patrol returned fire and maneuvered the convoy out of the area. However, one GDF rank sustained two gunshot wounds to his right leg. He received medical care and has since been evacuated from the area.

The Guyana Defence Force said it continues to maintain an active operational presence along the western border. The GDF also said it remains fully committed to the protection of its personnel and the safeguarding of Guyana’s territorial integrity.
