GECOM asks APNU+AFC to submit additional evidence on voter impersonation for Police Probe; Commission claims it cannot hand over its information on voters

The Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), retired Justice Claudette Singh, has written to the Chief Scrutineer of the APNU+AFC, Carol Smith-Joseph, requesting that additional information be provided to the Commission to be forwarded to the police for them to continue their investigations into claims of voter impersonation at the last elections.

In a statement today, the Elections Commission said Justice Singh at the request of the APNU+AFC, forwarded to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the General Register Office (GRO), the information sent by the APNU+AFC in relation to allegations of voters’ impersonation during the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

GECOM noted that in that regard, the Guyana Police Force has since requested that the addresses of the alleged persons to be provided.

Although GECOM has the information of every voter contained in its database, the Commission explained that it cannot provide such information.

The APNU+AFC yesterday protested the office of the Elections Commission calling for a speedy resolution to its claims.

Protestors led by Smith-Joseph said that a list was already forwarded to GECOM which is in possession of all relevant information.

But the elections commission today said something differently.

According to the Commission, while it is committed to ensure that the concerns raised by the APNU+AFC are adequately addressed in a prioritized manner to ensure a resolution within the shortest time possible, it is of crucial importance to note that, notwithstanding that GECOM is the custodian of the National Register of Registrants Database (NRRDB) which contains personal information of all registrants, the Commission cannot release such information to the Police owing to legal confidentiality issues that might arise.

The APNU+AFC has been calling on the Elections Commission to provide the information that will show that there was voter impersonation at the last elections.
