The Government of Guyana today said the Opposition Leader needs to be reminded that he is the holder of a Constitutional Office and therefore needs to be truthful with the Guyanese people.
In response to several statements made by Mr. Jagdeo on a 94.1 FM radio programme yesterday morning, the Government of Guyana said the Opposition Leader continues to make “baseless and unsupported allegations against the Government, forgetting that he holds a constitutional post and is obligated to present only the truth to the citizenry.”
The Government said Mr. Jagdeo continues to call the Government illegal although the Court of Appeal has invalidated the no-confidence motion.
The Ministry of the Presidency reminded that Justices of Appeal, Chancellor (Ag) Madam Yonette Cummings-Edwards and Madam Dawn Gregory both agreed that in order for the vote to be valid there needed to be 34 votes as opposed to 33 as was asserted by the Opposition People’s Progressive Party.
The Opposition Leader has since appealed the ruling of the Appeal Court and claims that if the CCJ rules in his favour, all the actions of the government after March 21 would be illegal. The Government says that is not so.
The Government said that given the ruling of the Court of Appeal, the Government has resumed its functions, adding that should the CCJ overturn the decision of the Court of Appeal, the Government will abide by that ruling.
On the issue of dual citizenship, the Government said all Government ministers who hold dual citizenship have since resigned from Parliament effective April 1, 2019.
During the same radio programme, Mr. Jagdeo said his Members of Parliament who are dual citizens will be staying away from the Parliament with the rest of the party. He said they will not be resigning.
The Government of Guyana in its statement said it has demonstrated consistently that it will abide by the laws of Guyana and any ruling of the courts.
