Government to introduce standardized license plates with security features

The Government of Guyana intends to introduce standardized license plates for all registered motor vehicles as a way of addressing security concerns.

The announcement was made this morning by Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman and comes on the heels of the decision of the administration to have special registration numbers for all state owned vehicles.

State vehicles will soon carry the CRG letters to indicate that the vehicle is the property of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

Private vehicle owners will in the future get their license plates through the Guyana Revenue Authority upon registration.

Minister Trotman explained that private companies that are involved in the current making of license plates might be consulted on the process and might be invited to make bids. But the standardized plates will have security features that would assist law enforcement better.

As it is now, license plate numbers could be made by any printing company and there would be no requirement for the company to confirm the vehicle number. In the past, criminal elements would have bogus license plates made and attach them to their getaway vehicles.  Trotman said the government is trying to stamp that problem out.
