Government pursuing modern vehicle registration system

The Guyana Government is pursuing the likelihood of introducing a more modern vehicle registration system as it looks to tackle the ills that have accompanied the increase in motor vehicles on the country’s roadways.

The modernization is likely to see new and standardized license plates being issued for all categories of motor cycles and cars, diplomatic vehicles and vehicles belonging to the state such as the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force.

The new plates, should it be taken on board, will have tamper proof features that will allow for better tracking of vehicle owners and their payment of taxes.

The new system is likely to also bring an end to the free accessing of license plates from roadside manufacturers and will seek to ensure strict adherence to design and standard.

A proposal was made on Wednesday by Eurosign Guyana, a Guyanese company out of Miami Florida to Government Ministers, Officials of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and members of the Guyana Police Force, Traffic Department.

The Company is looking to secure the contract to implement and operate a successful modern vehicle registration system here.
Guyana had inherited its license plate system from the British but the company believes that the current system allows for several illegal activities, including failure to pay registration fees and vehicle cloning.

“In order to avoid paying import taxes, someone can go to Suriname buy a car and drive it over then get the plates for a similar car that was registered here and slap it on,” an Executive reasoned.

It was noted that citizens in Guyana can buy any number plates without paperwork from a manufacturer.

The new plate will have several security features that will allow the police to do better tracking of vehicles and is also expected to help the police in solving crimes and address traffic infringements.
