Govt. Rejects 5 of Jagdeo’s resubmitted GECOM nominees

The meeting between representatives of the President and the Leader of the Opposition in the GECOM Chairman selection process continued on Tuesday with the Government side rejecting five of the eleven resubmitted nominees put forward by the Leader of the Opposition.

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joe Harmon told reporters after the meeting that with the five names rejected, the Government has placed four on a shortlist to go forward, while the two other names are still up for active consideration.

Mr. Harmon said reasons have been given for those that have been rejected.

He also indicated that it is likely that the Opposition Leader could put forward additional nominees.

Harmon did not want to provide the names of those rejected, stating that the two sides agreed that they would not do that because the persons would have offered up themselves for public service.

Mr. Harmon said the eight names put forward by the President as suggestions will likely be examined at the next meeting which will be on Thursday.

According to the President’s representative, the Government is taking the process very seriously and hopes to complete it before the end of this week.

The two sides are hammering out the resubmitted names and suggestions as a way of coming up with six names that will formally be submitted to the President for his consideration.

The Opposition Leader’s representatives left the venue of the meeting without offering any comments to the media.
