GTU threatens protest over assault of teachers

The Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Education are investigating the assault of a teacher of the St Agnes Primary School by two parents.

The assault took place in the classroom of the Georgetown school on Wednesday and was captured on camera.

The Guyana Teachers Union in a statement, came out in strong condemnation of the action of the parents, saying that there must be zero tolerance on the assault of teachers.

The union noted that it is not the first case of a teacher coming under attack by a parent in the classroom and it is becoming worrying. The union wants all of its teachers to wear black and white on Monday in protest of the acts of violence against teachers.

The union also called out the Guyana Police Force for its sloth in investigating another recent incident where a teacher was also assaulted in the classroom by an angry parent.

In the video recording of the latest incident, the teacher is seen on the floor of the classroom being kicked by the male parent and the female parent is also seen attacking and hitting the teacher.

News Source understands that the parents were called to the school following an incident involving their son and another boy who also attends the same school, resulting in the other boy being hospitalized.

It was during a meeting with the parents that one of the parent objected to the teacher’s view of how they should address the incident. Voices were reportedly raised and the teacher was first attacked by the mother, according to witnesses.

The male parent soon became involved in the scramble despite the efforts of other teachers to pull them apart.

The Education Ministry this afternoon confirmed that its investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
