Jagdeo wants GECOM to provide list of all changes to RLE to political parties

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo today called on the Guyana Elections Commission to provide a list of all of the changes it has been making to the Revised Voters List to the political parties.

GECOM has indicated that the house-to-house data is being incorporated on the Revised Voter’s List and the changes requested by persons to their addresses will also be accommodated in time for the Final Voter’s list.

At his weekly press conference today, the Opposition Leader said he still has concerns by the move of the Guyana Elections Commission.

“Nobody at GECOM should be making large scale changes to the RLE now that the statutory processes are over, but that is precisely what is happening. And therefore if we can’t stop these changes, with them saying they are updating the addresses using house to house unverified data, that all of the political parties must get a list of all the changes made”, Jagdeo told reporters.

He said he has since raised the issue with the Commonwealth official who is as an advisor to the Elections Commission.

Mr. Jagdeo said his party has been vigilant on the issue and will remain vigilant since he believes incorrect changes could lead to the possible disenfranchisement of voters.

The Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission, Justice Claudette Singh has defended the Commission’s move to add the names from the house to house data to the revised list and to effect changes where necessary.

She said things must be done the right way and she does not want to disenfranchise any voter.
