A social media page that goes by the name of “Guyana Daily News” came in for strong criticism on Friday after encouraging persons to head down to the Mohamed’s Enterprise building to receive $100,000 cash from the popular business family.
From as early as 3 o’clock this morning, persons were spotted in lines outside the business place on Lombard Street, unaware that there was no giveaway taking place.
By Sunrise as reality started to rise on them, the Mohamed company issued a statement, lashing out at the “Guyana Daily News”, which appeared closely linked to the Government and the Sheriff Company, for the “Fake News” report.
The Mohameds said “it is unfortunate that the real issues affecting the Guyanese people and their family are being manipulated by known associates on a daily basis”, adding that “Guyana Daily News” had used its platform to broadcast false information and disrespect Guyanese.
Many of those who gathered this morning were less fortunate and disabled persons.
The Ministry of Home Affairs in a statement of its own also condemned the actions of “Guyana Daily News”, while not naming the social media entity.
The Ministry said the social media message that was broadcast across social media was a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and create unnecessary confusion.
The Ministry called on citizens to remain vigilant and verify information through official government channels before acting on such announcements.
An Attorney at law stated on Facebook that there are a number of cyber crime charges that could be filed against the person operating the Guyana Daily News page.
