Guyana in list of Top 20 countries with highest murder rate

Guyana has been placed on the Top 20 list of countries with the highest murder rate in the world.

In a report released by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation which examines the homicide rate in countries among every 100,000 persons, Guyana ranked #15 with 20.2 murders for every 100,000 persons. The report also found that almost half of the murders are by firearms.

The report highlights the number of illegal firearms in the country and accessibility to those firearms also.

A number of other Caricom countries have made their way to the Top 20 list with the highest murder rate. Among them are Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, The Bahamas and Belize. A number of african and latin American countries have also found their way on the list. Honduras tops the list as the country with the highest murder rate per 100,000 persons.

The government has come under continuing criticism for the high crime rate in Guyana. The Guyana Police Force has reported that over 115 murders have taken place for this year already in the country. The murder rate has been rising steadily over the past few years.
