The Guyana Press Association has again raised concerns over the treatment of journalists in Guyana. The Association is now requesting international assistance to fight the harassment and cyber bullying of media workers in Guyana.
In a release this morning, the GPA condemned the latest attack on Kaieteur News Journalist Davina Bagot on the Facebook page titled “Live in Guyana”. The GPA said the page is known to be operated by agents of the governing People’s Progressive Party.
The Press Association said this is not the first time the page has attacked and put journalists’ safety in jeopardy and the latest attack follows questions that senior leaders of the government party find objectionable.
The Press body said it remains in contact with several regional and international organisations and has made known its concerns about the safety of journalists in Guyana.
“The GPA is publicly urging international assistance to fight this harassment of media operatives in Guyana. The association will endorse any effort by media operatives to have the Guyana Police Force investigate the violation of the Cyber Crime Act, as well as the violation of the rights of women by the Women and Gender Equality Commission.
The GPA is also seeking the solidarity of women rights organisations in condemning the latest “dastardly attack” against a female member of the media corps.
The GPA indicated that it has noted the attempts to harass the media whenever searching questions are asked, and the many other acts of intimidation.
“With a significant majority of media workers being women, the GPA urges all media workers to ensure that the leadership of your body is always in a position to defend our collective rights locally, regionally and internationally. It is imperative that the association remains free from the tentacles of control, domination and manipulation by politicians and other interest groups with narrow interests to serve,” the Press Association said.
In recent weeks, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has been up in arms with a number of journalists from the privately owned Kaieteur News over questions they have raised
been asking regarding the oil and gas sector.
