Almost three weeks after Guyana recorded its first case of monkeypox, the patient has been released from the Ocean View Infectious Diseases hospital after no longer showing any signs or symptoms of the virus and being declared non-infectious.

The 50-year-old man’s relatives who were placed under quarantine have also been released from the quarantine order and are now able to resume their regular daily lives.

Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony said with patient zero no longer infectious, he is allowed to resume his regular activities.

“Our first patient is now back at home and that patient is non infectious and can now resume work. We had his close contacts in quarantine and they have all now been rechecked and none of them show any signs or symptoms of monkeypox, so they can resume normal activities as well. Our second patient, we will continue monitoring and once the time is up, we will release that patient as well”, he said.

The Health Minister explained that a number of other persons unrelated to the country’s first two cases presented themselves to be tested for the monkeypox virus but those test results were negative.

He said the Ministry of Health will continue its efforts to raise awareness of the virus. Guyana has been conducting its own PCR tests for the monkeypox virus. Only two cases have been confirmed in the country so far.
