Guyanese couple held with over 40 lbs cocaine at CJIA

A Guyanese man and his pregnant wife who were using the VIP Lounge of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport were busted with a large quantity of cocaine early on Friday morning.

The two, who were outgoing passengers, were already in the exclusive high security area when they were nabbed by officers attached to the Narcotics Branch of the Guyana Police Force.

News Source understand that overĀ 40 pounds of cocaine was found in the bags belonging to the passengers. The illegal substance was found after the two were recalled for additional screening.

There are reports that investigators suspect the involvement of airport personnel and they also believe that some former drug enforcement officers may be linked to the case. Additionally they believe that a protocol officer attached to the Foreign Affairs Ministry may also be linked to the couple and their access to the VIP area.

This latest bust has raised concern again about the security at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The VIP lounge is usually reserved for Government officials, visiting dignitaries, celebrities and diplomats.

In the past, some persons attached to the airport have expressed concern about other persons being granted access to the lounge.
