Social media talk show host, turned Government contractor, Mikhil Rodrigues aka “Guyanese Critic”, has offered an apology to former Government Minister Simona Broomes over statements he made against her on his social media talk show.
Ms. Broomes, who is also an award winning Human Rights Activist, has filed a $450 Million lawsuit against Rodrigues after he told his audience on his talk show, that she was involved in the trafficking of persons and also operated a “whore house” in the mining community.
The lawsuit was called yesterday for a status hearing, and it was there that Rodrigues approached Broomes to offer his apology.
“I am very reactive and because of the circumstances around me, because its my business, but this morning when I walked in and I saw Ms. Broomes with a bright sunny smile, and I want to think that we are sitting in the Courtroom and she would be angered and it brought me to thinking that let’s see the human side of this and I did in the Courtroom tell her that we are in the Court and there is a monetary interest attached to the lawsuit, but there is also a human side and I told her, I simply said if you are affected personally, because this has nothing to do with personality issues, this is about a legacy and the work she has done and how she wants to be seen in society, so obviously I said I sincerely apologise if i have affected you personally”, Rodrigues told reporters outside the Courtroom.
Ms. Broomes said her Attorneys will continue to deal with the matter.
“To say that I was trafficking and had kaimos (whorehouses) and things like that is something that I take deep because I risked my life fighting it, and it is something I wished I didn’t have to go through and never had to see and never had to rescue a victim, and it is something that is really deep and not something that is funny or because I am sensitive, or its shouldn’t be for political jabs”, the former Minister said.

The lawsuit details that on one of his morning programmes which was aired on the 22nd January 2024, Rodrigues made several libelous and defamatory statements against Ms. Broomes.
In addition to claiming that she once operated a “whore house” in the mining community and was involved in the trafficking of persons, Rodrigues also claimed that the former Government Minister received a US$225,000 scholarship from Government and was involved in scams.
The lawsuit details that on the same programme, Rodrigues also claimed that Ms. Broomes was involved in shutting down various mining operations in the interior region to benefit her own.
All of the statements made by Rodrigues during the morning programme have been rubbished by Broomes and her Attorneys from the Dexter Todd Law Firm.
They are seeking the award of damages in various amounts for the various defamatory and libelous statements they said he made.
In total, they are seeking $450 Million from Rodrigues.
Simona Broomes was recognised by the US State Department as an International Hero in the fight against trafficking in persons, for her endless work in tackling the scourge.
