Guyanese man charged for attempted murder of wife in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA.  Police have arrested the suspect in a shooting Thursday night in west Topeka that injured a woman identified only as the man’s wife.

Shiek Azeez, 37, of Guyana, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with attempted second-degree murder. Bond has been set at $500,000 cash or professional surety. His next court date is set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 15.

Azeez was booked into jail at 2:38 a.m. Friday. He also was booked in connection with aggravated burglary.

Topeka Police Department Capt. Brian Desch on Friday said the shooting victim was Azeez’s spouse, but wouldn’t identify her beyond that because of the domestic nature of the dispute. She had been shot multiple times and incurred what police officials initially described as life-threatening injuries. Police said she was admitted to Stormont-Vail Health Care in stable condition.

Police were called at 8:15 p.m. Thursday to 1306 S.W. Summit Woods Drive, the Overlook Apartments complex atop Huntoon Hill, on the report of a shooting. The female victim was immediately taken to Stormont-Vail, and a police perimeter was established around the immediate area. A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter and K-9 units assisted in an intense search that included the commercial areas just east of Huntoon Hill.

Shortly before 10 p.m., a man matching the broadcast description of the person being sought was located by police about a block away from the shooting site. Police established that the man was Azeez and took him to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning. He was booked into jail early Friday. (cjonline.com)
