Guyanese man extradited from Trinidad to the U.S for financial crimes and fraud

In 2011, his name and photo were circulated internationally via an INTERPOL Red Notice (Fugitive Alert) as being wanted by U.S. authorities for: Conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud; Two counts of Wire Fraud, Three counts Mail Fraud, Conspiracy to commit bank fraud, Conspiracy to commit money laundering and Three counts of Money Laundering.

Guyanese man extradited from Trinidad to the U.S for financial crimes and fraud

Guyanese born Ravindranauth Roopnarine, who is wanted in the USA for a series of financial crimes, was on Friday 22nd May, 2015, extradited from Trinidad & Tobago to USA under escort by United States Marshals.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, the 54-year-old man who has Canadian citizenship, is also known as Ravi Roopnarine.

In 2011, his name and photo were circulated internationally via an INTERPOL Red Notice (Fugitive Alert) as being wanted by U.S. authorities for: Conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud; Two counts of Wire Fraud, Three counts Mail Fraud, Conspiracy to commit bank fraud, Conspiracy to commit money laundering and Three counts of Money Laundering.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred during the period 01st April 2006 and 11th January 2009 in Florida, USA.

As a result of investigations conducted by the Trinidad and Tobago INTERPOL office, Ravi Roopnarine who is a U.S. resident was found to be in Trinidad.

The Police in Trinidad notified U.S authorities and a request was made for his extradition. The Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago acceded to the request and a Warrant of Arrest towards extradition to USA was obtained by the INTERPOL Bureau (CID & CRO).

“On Tuesday 06th January, 2015, Mr. Roopnarine was arrested by Detective, PC Jason Dailey of the INTERPOL Bureau at Yue Hua Chinese Restaurant and Bar located along the Manahambre Road, Ste Madeleine and he handed him over to Cpl Dirk John, who later executed the warrant on Mr. Roopnairne. After subsequent appearances in court, Mr. Roopnarine appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Mark Wellington, on Monday 04th May, 2015 where he waived extradition proceedings and opted to return to the USA to face prosecution for the said crimes. 2 He was then ordered to be extradited by consent by Magistrate Wellington”, the Trinidad and Tobago Police said.
