Hicken admits pace of Police investigations remains low

Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken today said notwithstanding the achievements made by the Guyana Police Force, an analysis of the Force’s performance has revealed that the pace of police investigation remains low in some areas.

Commissioner Hicken made the disclosure while addressing the opening of the Annual Police Officers’ Conference.

“We must also acknowledge that crime investigation in some areas remains too low affecting case progression and public confidence,” the Police Commissioner said.

He said in response, the Force has adopted a phased and disciplined approach, and has been rolling out reforms while expanding training to ensure delivery remains practical, sustainable and grounded in operational routine.

The Commissioner said driven by technology, innovation and leadership, the Guyana Police Force has achieved 75 percent of the objectives outlined in its 2022-2026 Strategic Plan.

According to the Top Cop, in 2025, the Force’s greatest strength was integrating technology, infrastructure and accountability to deliver results.

He reported that Guyana saw a 25 percent reduction in serious crimes last year.

The Commissioner also told the conference that with the deployment of technology, the roads are much safer. He explained that road accidents are on the decline, although road deaths have increased.

Mr. Hicken noted that the implementation of the Safe Road Intelligence System last year has seen more than 35,000 e-speeding tickets being issued.

The Police Officer’s Conference is being held under the theme “Modern Policing for a Modern Nation: Integrating Technology, Innovation, and Leadership to Strengthen Public Safety and Trust.”
