A Bagotstown man’s home was set ablaze around noon on Wednesday, even as the police continued to hunt him for the shooting death of 24 – year – old wanted man , Jermaine Simon, also of Bagotstown.

The torching of the suspect’s home, which he shared with another woman and her children, is believed to have stemmed from and is in retaliation to Tuesday night’s shooting incident.

No one could say for sure how the fire began, but residents in the area were the first responders. The residents formed a bucket brigade to extinguish the blaze which threatened nearby houses.

Simon was executed in the presence of his mother and younger sister while riding a bicycle along Norton Street at about 8:30 pm on Tuesday.

The grieving woman told News Source that she was walking behind her son when he was approached by a man she identified as Anthony Amsterdam who shot the young man once to the forehead.

She recounted that as she attempted to rush to her son’s assistance; the shooter pointed the gun in her direction and threatened to shoot her and Simon’s younger sister before making good his escape.

“He (Simon) came to see his grandmother… when my son reached to he (Anthony) gate he raised up, cause he was ducking down and point the gun to him and shot it… he (Anthony) was on the phone with someone telling them I just shoot him, I just kill him,” the woman said.

Simon was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where he died while receiving treatment. The older Simon believes the shooting stems from a “long ongoing problem” between her son and several other young men in the area.

According to a police report, the dead man was wanted for the murder of a Providence teenager. The family claimed that he was innocent and was again being set up by the gang that was after him for some time.

They explained that Jermaine Simon could not afford an Attorney and was unable to turn himself over to the police.

The dead man’s mother and other relatives say they are now fearful for their own lives and is calling on the police to do their work so that justice can be served.
