Opposition Leader and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo, today said he is ready to engage with the President on the appointment of a new Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.
At his Thursday press conference, Mr. Jagdeo said it is important for the process to move forward with the appointment of a GECOM Chairman in wake of the ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice.
On Tuesday, the CCJ ruled that President David Granger’s unilateral appointment of a GECOM Chairman was flawed and not in keeping with the Constitution.
The President has said that he intends to write the Opposition Leader to resume consultations on the appointment of a Chairman of the Elections Commission.
Today, the Opposition Leader said he could have a list of nominees ready within a matter of hours.
He said he hopes there will be no delay in appointing a GECOM Chairman since that could further delay the hosting of elections. He wants the CCJ to include issues related to the GECOM Chairman appointment in its consequential orders.
The Opposition Leader said he still believes GECOM could host elections within three months with an updated list of electors.
The President’s position is that there must be house to house registration before elections.
