The General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo this afternoon dismissed reports that the party was considering a plan to replace Prime Minister Mark Phillips with Works Minister Juan Edghill as Prime Ministerial Candidate for the upcoming elections.
At a press conference this afternoon, Mr. Jagdeo described Prime Minister Phillips as an asset to the PPP. He said the Ali-Phillips team has been gaining remarkable momentum throughout the country.
“Mark is an asset to this party, Mark brings great credibility to our list and to our ticket, he combined with President Ali, they have experience and the skill to lead this country, compare to anyone. So, I just want people, not to be misled to these rumours,” Mr. Jagdeo told a press conference afternoon.
Mr. Jagdeo said there was never a doubt that Mr. Phillips would return as the party’s PM candidate.
He said Mr. Phillips has and continue to serve the country well and has brought credibility to the PPP’s camp.

“He shall be our Prime Ministerial Candidate, in our camp, we don’t make decisions one day and change it another day, that is what the APNU and AFC are worried about. So, to spread a rumour like that and then have sensible people also write about it and raise it as a concern just shows the influence of stupidity on people’s mind,” the PPP general secretary noted.
Mr. Jagdeo said there is no panic in the PPP camp to the point where it is considering to change its Presidential or Prime Ministerial candidates.
“Mark Philips has been a great Prime Minister for this country, Mark Phillips has decency, credibility, he headed the army, commanded people, he walks around this country with pride and we are proud of him,” Jagdeo told reporters.
Describing the information as “rumours”, the Vice President said his supporters must brace for more misinformation as elections draw near.
