Labour Market Information System to be established to match available jobs to job seekers

Noting that the country’s rapid transformation has placed great pressure on the labour market to provide the requisite work-ready skills and competencies necessary to match the growing demand, the government has announced plans to develop a Labour Market Information system for persons to seek employment that matches their qualifications and skills.

This was announced by Finance Minister, Dr. Singh on Monday.

He said the system is intended to fix the mismatch between available jobs and persons seeking employment.

“We aim to build out the non-oil sector of our economy the resilience and professional work ethic of our labour force will be crucial to achieving a dynamic and sustainable development path. Government will continue to monitor the labour market dynamics in the economy to ensure that we are proactive in our interventions to ensuring that the labour supply does not hinder our competitiveness and remains responsive to our ever-expanding development needs,” the Finance Minister stated during the presentation of the 2024 budget.

To address some of the challenges faced in the labour market, the Minister said the government has collaborated with the private sector on several initiatives. Some of those initiatives include the expansion of opportunities for the working population to be trained in employment ready jobs.

This he said, is evident in the investments in technical and vocational education. Additionally, the government said it will support the importation of skilled workers, to fill gaps within critical sectors such as in the construction and health sectors.

The government said there will also be targeted initiatives aimed at creating jobs across the entire country, with a view to ensuring geographic dispersion of opportunities for job seekers.
