24-year-old Labour Ministry driver, Nionel Berkley lost his life last evening as he rode his motorcycle and crashed into a woman while she was walking on the pedestrian crossing on the East Bank public road at Agricola.
The accident occurred around 7 pm on Monday.
A police statement said Berkley was proceeding north along the centre of the western carriageway when he collided with the pedestrian. The impact of the collision pitched the rider and the pedestrian onto the roadway. The rider was not wearing any helmet at the time and it is suspected that he badly hit his head on the roadway.
The two were picked up and taken to the Georgetown Hospital in an unconscious state, where the rider was pronounced dead on arrival while the pedestrian was rushed into emergency care. She remains hospitalised.
The 24-year-old rider lived in the East Ruimveldt community and was the driver for the Minister of Labour. Investigations are ongoing.
