Late night boat tragedy claims lives of Pomeroon siblings

An Upper Pomeroon family has been thrown into mourning following a river tragedy that has claimed the lives of two young siblings on Monday night.

Five-year-old Reshanna Atkinson and 1-year-old Josiah Atkinson were in the company of their parents late last night in a boat traveling along the Pomeroon river when tragedy struck.

The boat reportedly capsized as the family made their way home in the dark of the night. The boat started to sink after hitting an object in the river, throwing the parents, the two young children and an older sibling overboard.

The parents were unable to save the two youngest children, while the eldest child who is 7-years-old survived by holding on to a pack of pampers.

The father was operating the engine boat at the time of the tragedy. The Police Commander in the area, Khemraj Shivbaran told News Source that the boat capsized after reportedly hitting an unknown object. He said visibility was bad and the boat was not equipped with any lights.

“His visibility was poor because he was using a phone light which was not adequate enough to see whatever was in the water,” the Commander further explained.

The parents and the eldest child were able to swim to safety, but the two young siblings could not be saved. Their lifeless bodies were found in the river this morning, plunging the family into deep mourning.

The Police Force has launched a full investigation.
