Linden couple charged for cocaine in fudge; Husband pleads guilty

A husband and wife from Linden appeared in Court today to face charges of drug trafficking with their attempt to ship six pounds of cocaine out of Guyana in a box of fudge.

36-year-old Shaka Nunes and 45-year-old Vanica Williams appeared before the Chief Magistrate this morning. The husband, Shaka Nunes, immediately entered a guilty plea to the charges, telling the Court that he has five children and does not want to waste the Court’s time.

He was immediately sentenced to four years in jail and fined $1.7 million.

With his guilty plea, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit decided to withdraw the case against the wife, Vanica Williams and she was set free. The woman had claimed that she was asked by her husband to ship the package, but was unaware of its contents.

The two were arrested on Monday after a search of a box of fudge that they were shipping to the United States revealed a quantity of cocaine.

The package was reportedly dropped off first at the DHL Shipping office in Linden, but it wasn’t until it got to Georgetown that the discovery was made during preparation for the shipment to the US.

CANU agents tracked the couple down and made the arrest.
