Linden man loses control of vehicle, drives off Mackenzie/Wismar bridge

Rescuers and volunteer divers were busy on Saturday morning  trying to locate the body of Linden businessman Collis Mentis aka Tom, who reportedly lost control of his vehicle while cross the Mackenzie Wismar Bridge and plunged into the murky waters below.

After  about two hours of frantic searches by scores of persons, the vehicle was located and efforts began to pull the wreckage from the Demerara River in the mining town. It was unclear whether there were other persons in the vehicle with the businessman at the time of the incident. A crane was brought to the scene to assist in pulling the vehicle from beneath the waters. After several minutes, the vehicle was eventually pulled from beneath the waters. Only the businessman’s  body was found trapped inside.

Reports out of Linden state that just after 8 o’ clock on Saturday morning, the businessman who was driving  his Toyota sports utility vehicle was approaching the bridge from the Wismar side when he lost control and crashed through the protective barriers to the side and into the river. He was reportedly heading home from an all night party at the Christianburg basketball court.IMG_20131228_100425

Family and friends were spotted at the scene trying to comfort each other as they were hoping for the best but expecting the worst. One young woman said “I saw him at the party a few hours ago and he was enjoying himself, he was so full of life and enjoying himself, this is tragic”.

The young businessman operates a wholesale beverage company in the town and previously owned a sports bar. He recently invested in the purchase of a new building on Republic Avenue in Linden. The building was torn down and a new two storey business centre is being built in his place.
