After being on the run for more than 10 years, the second man who was wanted for the July 2015 murder of gay sex worker, Noel Luther, has been deported from the United States to Guyana.
Kanand Ojha, who was arrested in Queens, New York, last year arrived in the country this afternoon.
He was handed over to local law enforcement at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and was then placed on a local flight to the Eugene, F. Correia International Airport at Ogle. He was marched before the media cameras that were gathered at the Ogle Airport, and eventually whisked off to the CID headquarters.
Ojha, who is originally from Meadow Bank on the East Bank of Demerara, was one of the two prime suspects in the gunning down of the gay sex worker on the night of the 22nd July, 2015 on Carmichael Street in Georgetown.
His alleged accomplice, Ron “Andel” Forde, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2017, after pleading guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter in connection with the crime.
A wanted bulletin was first issued for Ojha in July, 2019 in relation to the murder.
In September last year, Law Enforcement Authorities in Queens, New York arrested Ojha and the process began for his removal from the United States.
At the time of the arrest, the Guyana Government had said the arrest of Ojha is as a result of continuous collaboration and cooperation between the Government of Guyana through the Guyana Police Force, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Attorney General’s Chambers and authorities in the United States of America under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters platform.
Guyana and the U.S. Law Enforcement Agencies have strengthened their relationship, which has led to mutual cooperation in criminal investigations leading to the arrest of fugitives in both countries and their extradition to stand trial in the country where they have committed offences.
