One day after a Trans Guyana Cessna caravan aircraft overshot the runway at the Mabaruma Airstrip, the company is blaming the incident on the presence of an animal on the airstrip when the plane landed.
In a statement today, the airline said the aircraft was forced to run off the runway at Mabaruma as a result of an animal incursion onto the runway, which it said, caused considerable damage to the aircraft and endangering passenger safety, while the aircraft was landing.
Trans Guyana complained that the matter of animal and human invasion of hinterland airports owned and operated by the Government and currently under significant expansion and development, is of considerable concern to the airline.
It noted that the situation poses a continuing threat to all commercial and private aircraft utilizing the airstrips which are not under required supervision.
Trans Guyana Airways said it has brought the matter to the attention of the Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) as recently as the 9th September, 2026, and earlier on 16th June, 2026.
One of the complaints related to the same Mabaruma Airstrip.
The airline said it is open to work together with the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority and other licensed aircraft operators in collaboration with the Aviation Operators Association to have the matter urgently addressed.
There were 11 passengers and the lone female pilot aboard the aircraft when the incident occurred. Some passengers have stated that it appeared as though the pilot could not bring the aircraft to a stop after the landing, resulting in it being forced off the runway.
A video recording of the landing has since surfaced, with some aviation experts describing the landing as a “long landing”, and stating that the aircraft should have been brought down for landing far before the position that it eventually landed.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is probing the incident.
