Manzoor Nadir returns as Speaker of the National Assembly unopposed

Manzoor Nadir has returned as Speaker of the National Assembly, while Government Member of Parliament, Dr Vishwa Mahadeo was elected Deputy Speaker.

The Government used its majority to block the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party from taking up the Deputy Speaker position, which was traditionally held by the Opposition.

Nadir, who served as Speaker during the 12th Parliament, was nominated for the position by Prime Minister Mark Phillips with Government’s Chief Whip Gail Teixeira seconding the nomination.

People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament, Dr Vishwa Mahadeo was elected Deputy Speaker over WIN’s nominee Tabitha Sarabo-Halley.

Receiving the full backing of his colleagues in the ruling party, Dr Mahadeo secured 36 votes to lock in the position, while MP Sarabo-Halley received a total of 17 votes, having received the support of the 16 WIN MPs, and the lone Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir.

The 12 MPs from the APNU abstained from the vote for Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
