Former TUF Leader Manzoor Nadir who also served as a Minister in the PPP Civic government, was today elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly.
Nadir who served in the Parliament for several years as a member of TUF before switching to the PPP was the only nominee for the position. He was nominated by Prime Minister Mark Phillips and seconded by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira.
The position of Deputy Speaker comes from the Opposition benches. There were two nominees for the post. The APNU+AFC which has the majority of seats on the Opposition side nominated AFC Chairman and former Speaker Raphael Trotman for the position.
However, the governing People’s Progressive Party nominated and used its majority to elect ANUG+LJP+TNM Joinder list representative Lenox Shuman for the post.
Shuman is a first time Member of Parliament and was the Liberty and Justice Party’s Presidential Candidate at the last elections. He was recently appointed Advisor on Civil Aviation in the PPP Civic government.
The National Assembly sittings are taking place at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre to ensure physical distancing in keeping with the COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
There was no official ceremonial opening this morning and no address to the new Parliament by the President.
