Guyana’s murder rate continues to spiral out of control and Police investigators on Thursday launched a search for a gunman who shot and killed a mason at Caneville on the East Bank of Demerara when the mason refused to hand over his gold chain.
Dead is 24-year-old Mark London. He was shot dead close to noon on Thursday while in the company of another friend. The two men were reportedly walking to a shop in the Caneville area when they were approached by a gun man who had been standing at the corner.
According to the friend who did not want his identity to be made public, the gunman demanded that London hand over his gold chain. When London refused, he whipped out his firearm and shot the young man to the chest, grabbed the chain and ran from the scene.
The friend said he ran from the scene also as the gunmen fired a number of other shots as he fled.
The two men reportedly saw the gunman at the corner of the street for a while but did not think there was any threat.
A large crowd gathered at the road corner where London’s lifeless body was left sprawled but covered up. A police investigation is ongoing.
The country has already recorded over 85 murders for this year already and well over 600 armed robberies.
