Mohamed confident US will lift sanctions; Not worried about Ambassador’s statement

Presidential Candidate of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed today expressed confidence that the sanctions imposed by the US against him and his father along with their business will be lifted.

Mohamed – a billionaire business turned politician, along with his father, Nazar Mohamed and their businesses, was sanctioned by the US Government in 2024 over tax evasion and gold under-declaration. Today, the WIN Presidential Candidate told reporters that his lawyers in the US are working to have the sanctions lifted soon.

“My lawyers in the United States of America they are presently working with OFAC to get me delisted, and I think and I am being very optimistic, that very soon I will be delisted so we can work together with the United States of America,” Mohamed told reporters shortly after launching his party’s manifesto.

On Wednesday, US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, warned that Mohamed’s election to Government or the National Assembly could hamper the existing relations between the US and Guyana.

In response, Mohamed said Guyana is a sovereign nation, and his decision to throw his hat into the political ring was based on the cries of the people.

“This is the first time I would agree with Bharrat Jagdeo, this is a sovereign nation, this is the will of the people. They want me to run for office and that is why I declared by candidacy because of the people of this country,” he said.

Ambassador Theriot said it would be problematic for the US Government to work with an OFAC-sanctioned individual whether that individual is in Government or in Parliament. She said the US would have to ensure that it does not work with the sanctioned individual “specifically.”

Addressing the issue during the launch of the party’s manifesto this afternoon, Mr. Mohamed, in response to a question posed by News Source, said he was also confident that the US will work with him once he is elected to office.

“When we take office the 2nd of September, the United States of America will work with us, will work with us. We saw recently what transpired between President Trump and the Syrian President. He lifted all of the sanctions, and he even congratulated him as a handsome young man,” Mohamed said.

Questioned about his next move should the sanctions not be lifted, Mohamed alluded to the statement made by the US Ambassador, suggesting that the US may be willing to work with other members of WIN, but not him specifically.
