Mohamed denies Foreign Minister’s claims of visits to Venezuelan Embassy and application for visa

Presidential Candidate and Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood party, Azruddin Mohamed, has denied claims by Foreign Minister, Hugh Todd, that he has been making frequent visits to the Venezuelan embassy and that he has applied for a Venezuelan visa.

Todd made the claims on Tuesday afternoon in an interview conducted and released by the Department of Public Information. Todd also stated in the interview that he summoned the Venezuelan Ambassador over the issue, and it was the Venezuelan Ambassador who allegedly told him that the Mohameds were at the Embassy to apply for Venezuelan visas.

But Azruddin Mohamed, who remains under US Government sanctions, said he has never visited the Venezuelan Embassy and has not applied for any Venezuelan visa.

He said the Government should produce the evidence of the visit.

In a statement, Mr. Mohamed rejected the statements by the Foreign Minister as “baseless, malicious, and politically motivated lies” being peddled against him and his family.

“I never visited the Venezuelan Embassy, nor have I applied for a visa to travel to Venezuela. This smear campaign is meant to be a distraction from the PPP alleged corruption being exposed making headways on social media. The PPP is attempting to divert attention from the truth and suppress the voices exposing their wrongdoing. To this end, I challenge the Venezuelan Embassy to produce the proof. Present any record of my entry to the Embassy. Show the Guyanese people a single shred of documentation of me applying for a visa,” Mr. Mohamed said.

Mohamed urged his supporters not to be distracted by the allegations as he believes it is the Government at work to denounce his bid, and divert attention from recent allegations of corruption against the government that has been picking up pace on social media.

“It is off-putting that this administration would stoop to such depths, squandering state resources in a quest for political mileage against me and by extension the WIN party. To coerce the Venezuelan Ambassador into misleading the Guyanese public speaks to the lengths this administration is willing to go using his ministers as pawns. It also exposes the fact that the government of Guyana is in cahoots with the government of Venezuela. If backdoor meetings are being had to concoct lies, such deception puts our territorial integrity at risk, and with leaders like this, our sovereignty could be bartered away behind closed doors. All of Guyana must recognize this for what it is, the Ali administration is in bed with the Government of Venezuela and this presents a looming danger to our national sovereignty”, Mohamed said.

Two months ago, a US Congressman tweeted claims of ties between Mohamed and the Venezuelan Government. The claims by the US Congressman later appeared to be part of a series of tweet suggestions that were shared with his office for dissemination by a lobbying firm that was hired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana on behalf of the Guyana Government.
