Multi-agency meeting convened on probe into labour allegations by Indian nationals

As the investigations into the alleged labour issues at the Ekaa Hrim Quarry company and the complaints by a group of Indian nationals who were employed at the company are ongoing, an inter-agency meeting was convened today with officials from the Ministries of Legal Affairs, Home Affairs as well as, Human Services, led by the Ministry of Labour & Manpower Planning.

The acting Indian High Commissioner was also part of the meeting.

The Ministry of Labour announced this evening that during the course of the discussions, the management of the EKAA HRIM company made a commitment to disburse all outstanding salaries and wages due, on or before the 27th of May, 2026.

The two sides also raised other matters and have undertaken to supply additional supporting documentation, in the new week.

The Labour Ministry said the investigation process is ongoing, and continues to be guided by the principles of due process, and compliance with the laws of Guyana.

Last weekend, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed brought attention to the plight of the Indian nationals, who complained that they were being underpaid by the company, were forced to work long hours and endure improper living and working conditions. They also complained about their salaries being withheld and their passports being confiscated.

The quarry company has denied the claims.
