Boat collision in North West District claims life of boat captain

A tragic boat collision in the Barama River in the North West District, Region One, has claimed the life of a boat captain.

The accident occurred on Thursday morning, according to the Police. It involved a wooden balahoo captained by a 24-year-old man and a small aluminum boat that was captained by another man, who was known only as “King”.

The Police report explained that the balahoo, which is a small boat, was proceeding along the Barama River from Bamboo Landing, North West District to Charity with four passengers when the collision reportedly occurred with the small aluminum boat.

Two occupants of the aluminum boat -the captain and a passenger- were pitched into the river as a result of the collision. The passenger was rescued, but the captain of the boat went under water and never resurfaced.

There have been ongoing searches for his body. The rescued man was rushed to the Moruca Hospital, where he was admitted.

The Police said the Captain of the Balahoo was arrested and has been assisting the Police with the investigations into the deadly accident.
