The Opposition coalition group, A Partnership for National Unity is stepping up its calls for the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, to demit office in wake of statements made in a recorded telephone conversation between the Attorney General and a Kaieteur News journalist.
At a Wednesday morning press conference, APNU point man on legal matters and Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker, Basil Williams said Mr. Nandlall needs to demit office immediately because the nation can no longer have any trust in him.
“The Attorney General as head of the Guyanese Bar and the Government’s legal adviser holds a pivotal position in the maintenance of law and order in this country. He has breached that trust reposed in that Office by the Guyanese people and must perforce pay the price. APNU calls for the immediate resignation of Mr. Anil Nandlal from the Office of Attorney General of Guyana”, Williams demanded.
During the recorded conversation the Attorney General could be heard complaining about coverage he and his family have been getting from the Kaieteur News. At one stage of the 19 minute conversation, he could be heard warning the reporter that he should leave the employment of Kaieteur News to save himself from the possibility of persons retaliating against the newspaper with weapons.
“Everybody just have a newspapers to use as a weapon. I told Adam people got weapons. They don’t have newspapers to use as a weapon, they have weapons and when you continue to attack people like that and they have no way of responding, they will just walk with their weapons into that same f%$king Saffon Street office and what comes to do and innocent and Peter will have to pay for f%$king Paul in there and I tell you honestly, I telling you man to man, that will happen soon and the quicker you get out of there, the better”, the Attorney General said during the recorded conversation.
The APNU is convinced that the statements made by the Attorney General confirms its belief that the Government may have links to persons who have run foul of the law.
According to Williams, “A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has over the years accused the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration of being in bed with criminals; extra judicial killings; contract killings; corruption and cavorting with drug lords. Our worst fears have been confirmed as a result of revelations emanating from a recorded conversation between the Attorney General, Anil Nandlal and a Kaieteur News reporter, Leonard Gildharie”.
He said if the calls of the Opposition fail to get the Attorney General to demit office, then the entire government will be forced to demit office, pointing to the no confidence motion that the AFC intends to move in the National Assembly.
Even with the calls for him to demit office, the Attorney General has since filed a $30 Million lawsuit against the Publisher/Owner and Editor of the Kaieteur News over that newspapers’ reporting on the recorded conversation. The Kaieteur News has accused the Attorney General of having knowledge of a violent act that was being planned against the newspapers.
The owner of the Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall has since filed an official complaint against the Attorney General over the “threatening” statements that are heard during the recording.
