Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall has filed a lawsuit against former coalition Government Minister, Jaipaul Sharma and PNC Member and Attorney James Bond.
Nandlall is seeking in excess of $25 million from each of the men over posts they made on the social media site, Facebook.
In a Facebook post made on Tuesday, Mr. Sharma is alleged to have made statements about Mr. Nandlall’s private law firm and it being involved in representing interests in the transfer of lands under the previous PPP government.
Mr. Nandlall has denied the allegations and first reached out to Sharma on the issue, threatening that legal action would be taken if the post was not moved.
Sharma stood by his allegations and Nandlall has now kept his promise to move to the Court over the post. He is claiming damage to his character and his law firm over the Facebook posts made by Sharma which he described as false and defamatory.
He wants the Court to issue a permanent injunction against Sharma from making any similar posts and is also seeking an apology by order of the Court.
The Attorney General is also seeking Court orders against PNC Member and Attorney James Bond over statements he made on the social media site when he shared the posts from Mr. Sharma.
Nandlall claims that Bond acted with Malice when he shared the Facebook status from Sharma and made statements of his own, which Nandlall feels were directed at him.
In addition to $25 million, the Attorney General also wants an apology from Bond over the statements made on social media which he believes were derogatory towards him.
Nandlall recently caused an investigation to be launched into at least two land deals that were done with Bond as the Attorney in the matter. His office has released various pieces of information on the issue to the press even as the matter is under investigation. Bond has denied the allegations and has repeatedly called out the Attorney General for his actions.
