Declaring that the People’s Progressive Party will never shut out any person from entering the political sphere, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has warned that those who are thinking to offer themselves up to the Guyanese electorate will have to face intense scrutiny like any other politician here.
Speaking during his weekly “Issues in the News” programme, Mr. Nandlall said the PPP is not discouraging anyone from joining the political world, but they must understand the level of scrutiny that comes with the territory.
“We welcome all and sundry, all we say that they will be subject to the type of scrutiny that is a norm in the Guyanese political environment and we hope that they can withstand the scrutiny. As the people say, if you can’t take the heat don’t enter the kitchen, but we have people rushing to the kitchen,” Mr. Nandlall said.
Mr. Nandlall said the political environment here is a competitive one, and is expected to be no less this year.
He said politicians over the years have faced brutal criticisms, some of which are unjustified.
“In Guyana, the criticisms can be brutal, they can be cruel the attacks are unfounded. We are not saying that we will embark on such course of conduct, all we are saying is that those who wish to enter the political arena must appreciate their conduct, their background, their record, their reputation, their character and their every activity will be subject to public scrutiny and will part of the political discourse,” Mr. Nandlall noted.
The Attorney General said once persons are open to scrutiny then there should be no issue if they want to contest elections.
Last week, the Leader of the Alliance For Change, Nigel Hughes declared his full support for any person or new political party looking to make an entrance on the political scene ahead of the 2025 General and Regional Elections, saying that it will give people more options and broaden political participation.
His comments were in response to Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who warned that persons will face intense scrutiny if they decide to run for political office.
