Minister of Labour Joe Hamilton intends to represent the interest of those private security guards who continue to face challenges with being paid their salaries on time.
The Labour Department is in receipt of several complaints from security guards who have indicated that in some instances they would find themselves working for two and three months without receiving a salary.
Minister Hamilton said that situation cannot continue.
“They are security companies who are not paying people for two and three months. Their excuse is that they are waiting on the government to pay them. That is your problem with the government. If you have people working for you, you need to pay them weekly and monthly with whatever is the agreement”, Hamilton said.
Hamilton said he has already had cause to visit one of the security companies that appear in breach of the contract with its workers. He said he intends to continue to go out into the communities to better understand many of the issues that workers are facing.
“I plan to meet with all the stakeholders so that they can have a clear understanding as to what the outlook and the vision going forward for the labour Ministry”.
For many years, employees attached to many private security companies have been raising their concerns with the Labour Department. Many of the security companies depend on government contracts and have complained about the length of time it takes for payments to filter down to them through the government system.
