New standard for timely delivery and quality of Government services to be implemented

President Irfaan Ali has announced that a new minimum standard for quality of service at Community Health Centres and at schools, has been agreed upon. The new standard is expected to be implemented nationwide soon, even as the President acknowledges that there are challenges that prevent citizens from accessing Government services at those facilities in a timely manner.

On Tuesday, President Ali met with Regional Health and Education Officers at the Presidential Complex and he explained the need for the delivery of service to be matched with Government’s investment.

He noted that while there are systematic challenges, there are initiatives that could be taken to improve services.

The meeting with the Regional Health and Education Officers was called days after the President held community meetings in a number of areas and was bombarded with complaints about the poor delivery of Government services.

“What we really sought to achieve today was finding the formula that will fix existing issues, inefficiencies in the system, whether it’s the small issues like washroom sanitation, the issues within health centres, health outposts, schools, or whether there were structural issues,” the President noted.

The President said his vision for systemic changes is to make service delivery more people-oriented. He asserted that part of that vision is to reduce the cost of accessing Government services.

“And we have set today the minimum standards that we will accept in facilities in every community for Health and Education. I have said also for example that our patients should not be coming every month to have the replenishment for their medical supplies, that every health centre must upkeep full register of all the patients, and their medical supply needs and they must be given three months supply,” the President said

According to the President, doing business with Government should not be costly for citizens, especially those at the community level.

“We want to reduce the cost of people doing government business, reduce the time it takes them to receive government service and improve the quality and delivery of that service and that is being more direct, more approachable creating a more customer-oriented environment and that all the investments that we are making are delivered on an optimum level,” the President noted.

The President has planned a number of other community outreaches in the coming weeks, as he prepares for his re-election bid later this year.
