No major flood damage to cash-crop and livestock farms -says Agriculture Minister

As a number of communities continue to face flooding as a result of persistent rainfall, Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha today said there has been no report of major damages to cash crop, poultry and livestock farms as a result of the recent floods. However, his Ministry is assessing the impact that the floods had on agricultural communities.

Torrential rainfall in recent days led to the flooding, but in an interview this morning, Minister Mustapha reported that the water was drained off of the land quickly in many areas.

“Across the country, I think most of the areas have been drained, and we have system in place in relation like pumps. All the sluices and outfalls are working and we will continue to monitor the situation. We had some problem in Black Bush Polder but the water now has receded tremendously and I think generally, we don’t have any major concern. I am hoping that the system can continue to work as it is working presently,” the agriculture minister explained.

He said the Agriculture Ministry will provide the necessary support to affected farmers, once the assessment is complete.

“We didn’t have any major, major flooding. We had some water on land, we had some agriculture areas, some cultivation areas were under water, but those areas have been drained now. My officers are doing an assessment, and if needs be, and people are losing crops, then we would have to look at it,” Minister Mustapha said.

A report of the assessment that is underway is expected to be completed this week.
