Presidential Candidate for the APNU, and Leader of the PNC/R, Aubrey Norton, today frowned upon suggestions that the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood party, (W.I.N), poses a threat to the APNU and its support base.
Speaking during a press conference this morning, Mr. Norton said while he notes and welcomes businessman Azruddin Mohamed to the electoral process, he does not believe that Mohamed’s party can dent or cause any damage to APNU’s base.
Norton said he is firm that the APNU’s support base will continue to support the APNU, noting that Guyanese usually vote for a party and not an individual.
‘From the evidence that is available a lot of people went there for the money, you must go back to the local government elections where the PPP felt they had all of this support from Georgetown and Linden and then what happen, the people collected their money and then they voted for the APNU, and we think the same will happen,” Norton told reporters.
Mr. Mohamed and his WIN party candidates have been crisscrossing the country, in a final push to convince Guyanese to vote for them. The party seems to be attracting a number of persons from Region Ten, which is a stronghold of the APNU.
But Mr. Norton said there is no need for alarm or concern.
“We are not worried about that, we know how to do our political work and we will do our political work,” the PNC leader said.
Executive Member of the PNC/R and APNU candidate, Ganesh Mahipaul said the APNU has examined the WIN list of candidates and has found that most of that party’s candidates are from constituencies that are normally won by the PPP/C.
In Region 10 for example, he said the area where the PPP/C got most of its support in 2020, persons from that area appear to now be backing WIN.
Like Norton, he also believes the APNU has nothing to worry about.
“So, we are not worried about him , what I want to say to the Guyanese people, is that we have seen how these small parties operate and often they fool the electorate and demonstrate some degree of independence and care and concern and records would show that everyone of them in their aftermath of securing votes, end up being in bed with the People’s Progressive Party,” Mahipaul stated.
