Opposition files motion to pressure Police on Berbice teen killings probe

The Opposition APNU+AFC has filed a motion in the National Assembly seeking the Assembly’s full condemnation of the murders of teenagers, Joel and Isaiah Henry and Haresh Singh.

The motion also presses the Guyana Police Force to expedite the investigations and ensure justice is served in the matter while expressing some concern about the state of the Police investigations.

The APNU+AFC is hoping that the motion will make its way on the order paper for an upcoming parliamentary sitting and be supported by both sides of the House.

The Opposition has been pressing the Government to do more in ensuring a proper and detailed investigation is completed into the three murders.

There have been calls for the government to fund a specialist forensic team from Argentina to assist with the investigations. But the government prefers to rely on the expertise of the Guyana Police Force and counterparts in the Caribbean.

The Guyana Police Force appears to have hit a stone wall with the investigations. Last week, it was announced that a number of new suspects were held, but nothing came out of their arrests.

There have been other arrests in the past.

Almost three months after the three murders on the West Coast of Berbice, the Police Force is coming under pressure with its investigations.

It was back in September that the bodies of cousins Isaiah and Joel Henry were found in the Cotton Tree backdam. Both bodies were mutilated and bore chop wounds. Days later, the body of Haresh Singh was found in the number 3 village backdam, hours after he left his home on a motorcycle to visit his family’s farm.

President Ali had promised that he would be leaving no stone unturned in the investigations.
