APNU Member of Parliament, Dr. Dexter Todd wants the Government to seriously address the question of the high cost of living and the quality of life of Guyanese, as the country celebrates its 60th Independence anniversary.
During a press conference, Dr. Todd said the country’s resources must be used to ensure that all Guyanese can enjoy a better quality of life.
He said too many Guyanese are living below the breadline while the country is at a critical juncture in its economy.
The Government, he believes, should seek to implement expanded social programmes to benefit those on the lower end of the pay scale.
“There has been no initiative in relation to subsidies, there have been no initiative in relation to how do we assist our people with the high cost of living. So, when we talk about celebration of sixty years, our position has been let’s talk about economic independence, our people are still struggling,” Todd stated.
The Opposition MP said while government has been boasting of assisting the Guyanese people, the real issues affecting persons remain unattended.
“I believe the government wants to continue to shy away from the real issues in society, we have outlined some of those issues such as inequality in relation to business opportunities affecting young people, high cost of living and issues that are now even minibus owners, those are the real issues
Mr. Todd said while the events being organized by government to celebrate the anniversary are important, they must not lose sight that many Guyanese still do not enjoy economic independence.
“This whole pomp and ceremony of raising of flags and all of that, while it is important, that is not what a true celebration and recognition of 60th years of independence should be,” Mr. Todd said.
He said he hopes the government can seriously consider the issues affecting young people and the vulnerable communities as a matter of urgency.
