The Guyana Fire Service has determined that the overheating of electrical appliances which resulted in sparking, was the cause of yesterday’s fire in Springlands, Corentyne which completely gutted a building that housed an upholstery shop and a hotel next door.
In a report today, the Guyana Service said two fire tenders responded to the blaze after an emergency call just after 9:30am.
The Fire Service said the two-storey building where the fire originated was completely destroyed.
The fire hopscotched its way to the building next door which housed Rita’s Hotel and Bar. Two of the three storeys of that building were gutted. A third building was also damaged by the blaze.
The Fire Service noted also that electrical poles and lines were damaged by the blaze. The Guyana Fire Service continues to encourage homeowners and business owners to have fire alarms and extinguishers at their properties. The country continues to record a significant increase in fires, many of them being electrical in origin.
